About our Mission in Kenya

Society of African Missions

The SMA was founded at Lyons, France on 8th December 1856 by Mgr Melchior de Marion Brésillac. Faithfully following in the footsteps of our Founder, the SMA missionaries in Kenya continue to be a ray of hope, shining the light of Christ among the people we serve and especially the most abandoned.

Our presence and ministry is varied, from parish ministry to social engagements such as peace building and responding to urgent and long-term needs of our Christians.

The SMA missionaries in Kenya are part of the larger family of Catholic missionaries who serve the people of Africa and people of African origin around the world. SMA stands for Society of African Missions (in Latin, Societas Missionum ad Afros).

The early presence of the Society of African Missions in Kenya is closely knit with the arrival of the missionaries in the Archdiocese of Nairobi at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Jericho, in 1992 in the persons of Frs. Patrick Connolly and William Joseph. From there we saw the Nairobi formation house inaugurated in 1994.
